The gas works is a cultural center founded in 1996 in Winterthur - Töss ( Switzerland ). Today concerts take place there two to four times a week, mostly from "alternative" music genres such as punk , ska , hard rock , indie pop , etc. However, other events such as vernissages or the cinema days also take place. The Niche reprise cinema is also housed in the gasworks, which shows independent films every Sunday, including lesser-known titles.

Gasworks

In 1996, because of the cultural wasteland, people looked for places for alternative cultural centers in Winterthur. This was also done by the youth lobby "Kaktus" when they rented the gas works, which at that time was a warehouse, and thought of using it for this purpose. After it was founded, the gasworks survived a referendum in addition to various not inconsiderable financial burdens . The SVP submitted the referendum in 2001 and thus opposed the municipal operating loan for the gas works. Over 60 percent of the Winterthur electorate then voted for the cultural center.

Today the cultural center is administered and operated by the "Gaswerk Kulturzentrum" association. The head of the association, which consists of an eight-person board, is responsible for administrative tasks of all kinds. Around 100 volunteers also work with us. With the exception of a secretary with a 30% workload, the entire facility is run entirely on a voluntary basis. It is also possible to rent the gasworks, be it the entire building or just part of the system.

The Winterthur cinema days also take place in the gasworks in February .

Cinema niche

The sofa cinema with bar was created together with the establishment in August 1996. First 16 mm films were shown until 1998, and since 1998 there is a 35 mm projector. Since then, there have also been performances every Sunday. Since the cinema does not receive any direct subsidies from the city, it can barely survive; its employees work on a voluntary basis. The cinema is a member of CineLibré , which organizes non-commercial, municipal cinemas in Switzerland.

The Niche cinema, together with the Winterthur film foyer, was the main initiator of the first short film days in Winterthur .
