The Döbling gas works , originally: Währing gas works , between today's Billrothstrasse 5 and Gymnasiumstrasse 50 in the 19th  district of Döbling in Vienna was a privately owned gas works .

history

The Döbling gasworks was built in 1856 by the British-based Imperial Continental Gas Association on the site of the former Schmitt'schen brick kilns between Hirschenstrasse and Feldgasse (later Billrothstrasse and Gymnasiumstrasse ).

The gas works had 30 retort furnaces with a total of 260 retorts and 4 gas containers. The surrounding suburbs and towns were supplied.

Due to the expiry of the lighting contract between the Imperial-Continental-Gas-Association and the City of Vienna on December 31, 1911 and the subsequent takeover of the gas supply for the entire urban area by the municipal gasworks Simmering and Leopoldau , the Döbling gasworks was closed and later canceled .

memory

The Gaswerkstrasse, which was renamed Exportakademiestrasse in 1919 and Franz-Klein-Gasse in 1926, was reminiscent of the Döbling gas works .
