Gas works favorites

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Favoriten gas works was a plant built by the Imperial Continental Gas Association to produce gas from coal. It was located at Sonnwendgasse  14 in Vienna's 10th district of Favoriten . Today the main fire station in Favoriten is located here .

history

The Imperial Continental Gas Association (ICGA) , founded in London in 1824, has been building coal-based gas works in Vienna since 1842 . At that time, the gas was used exclusively to illuminate streets and public buildings. The first small ICGA gasworks in Sonnwendgasse was intended to illuminate the nearby railway systems and was named "Belvedere". After the district of Favoriten was founded, the district administration signed a contract to expand the gas supply. In 1875 the facilities were therefore enlarged, pipes laid and street lamps erected. The city of Vienna had to pay for the operation of every single lantern. There were "half-night" lanterns burning until midnight and "all night" burning lanterns until dawn. Because of the unreliability of the gas supply, the municipality of Vienna terminated the contract with the ICGA and communicated the operation.

In the beginning there were many protests from the people living nearby. Although the plant supplied cheap coke for heating, it also had an offensive odor.

After the establishment of the Simmering gasworks supplying all of Vienna - at that time the largest in the world - in 1899 the Favoriten gasworks was shut down. The building fell into disrepair and was converted into the Favoriten Fire Station in 1909.

construction

The round building had a height of 20 m and a diameter of 16 m and a truncated conical roof. The facade showed various window shapes that corresponded to the architecture of the railway station at that time. This tower enclosed the gas container . The buildings used for the actual gas generation were housed in an annex and ancillary buildings. In 1875 a larger gasometer was built by the ICGA and the old small one was removed. This gasometer stood until the fire brigade took over the area.

A picture of the burning gas container during the Vienna October Uprising of 1848 shows the vedute “The storming of the Gloggnitz train station near Vienna” .
