Gausfred I.
Gausfred I (* before 931; † 991 ) was Count of Empuries-Peralada and Rosseló from 931 AD to 991 AD. He was the son of Gausbert I and Trudegarda.
His long reign was characterized by peace, although he was frequently challenged by Sarrazen pirate attacks on his capital, Castelló d'Empúries . He founded and promoted many churches and monasteries, especially the Sant Pere de Rodes monastery, which he helped found. He was the first Catalan count to mint his own coins independently of the French king .
He was the first Catalan count to call himself "Count by the grace of God". The French King Lothar called him “Our loyal friend and duke” in two legal documents. After the change of dynasty in May 987, Gausfred manifested his Carolingian legitimation thanks to Charles of Lorraine .
