The building of the former stock exchange and national bank in Warsaw is located in the inner city ​​district and is a corner building on Plac Bankowy and Ulica Elektoralna . Today there is a painting museum here. Opposite the Elektoralna is the building of the former Hotel Saski , on Plac Bankowy is the former palace of the Treasury . Another former building of the stock exchange is located in the extension of Elektoralna .

history

The classicistic , two-winged building, which is rounded at the connecting corner (facing the street) and crowned with a dome covering the former stock exchange hall , was built from 1825 to 1828 according to a design by Antonio Corazzi . For the connector to the main building of the stock exchange in the Elektoralna 2a recorded Jan Jakub Gay responsible. In 1830 a clock and a thermometer were installed on the facade. In its original version, part of the arcades was probably not glazed, the expansion of the usable office space that followed took place later. After various construction measures in the 19th century, the property was renovated from 1919 to 1921 under Marian Lalewicz .

The main part of the building was originally the seat of the Warsaw Stock Exchange (Polish: Giełda ), in a smaller area parts of the National Bank (Polish: Bank Polski ) of the Kingdom of Poland .

Muzeum Kolekcji im. Jana Pawła II

In 1944, the building was destroyed in the course of the Warsaw Uprising fighting . According to a project by Piotr Biegański , the building was rebuilt from 1950 to 1954. Later it housed the Museum of the History of the Revolutionary Movement (Polish: Muzeum Historii Ruchu Rewolucyjnego ) founded in 1957 . Since 1990 there has been a painting museum dedicated to the memory of Pope John Paul II ( Muzeum Kolekcji im. Jana Pawła II ). The approximately 450 exhibits were donated by the collector couple Janina and Zbigniew Porczyński.
