Plac Bankowy

The Plac Bankowy (German: Bankenplatz ) is a square in the Śródmieście district in Warsaw , Poland.

Location and surroundings

The square is located on Aleja Solidarności (German: Allee der Solidarität), Ulica Senatorska (German: Straße des Senators ) and Ulica Elektoralna .

West side

The west side of Plac Bankowy was marked in the 1820s by the construction of three government and bank buildings. Based on the designs by Antonio Corazzi , the building for the Polish Bank (Bank Polski) was built at Plac Bankowy 1 between 1825 and 1828. At Plac Bankowy 3, Corazzi built a classicist building for Finance Minister Lubecki between 1825 and 1830 . In 1825 Corazzi converted an aristocratic palace at Plac Bankowy 5 into a building for the Income and Treasury Commission, also known as the Finance Commission. In the post-war period, Piotr Biegański was responsible for restoring the entire ensemble of buildings on the west side of the square, consisting of the Leszczyński Palace , the Wiśniowiecki Palace and the Gmach Banku Polskiego .

East Side

In 1946 the "wealthy houses of wealthy citizens" on the east side of Plac Bankowy were demolished. This was made possible by the decree of Bolesław Bierut of October 25, 1945 "on the ownership and use of land in the area of the capital Warsaw", which transferred all land in the city limits of Warsaw into municipal ownership. The ulica Marszałkowska was extended to the north and, together with new tram tracks, led directly over the Plac Bankowy, which was greatly widened on the east side. On November 15, 1947, the first tram drove over the new Ulica Nowo-Marszałkowska and Plac Bankowy , which now bordered directly on the site of the former synagogue , where the Blue Tower Plaza was built.
