The Muzeum Kolekcji im. Jana Pawła II (German: Museum of the John Paul II Collection ) is a controversial collection of paintings dedicated to Pope John Paul II , which is housed in the building of the former stock exchange and national bank in Warsaw . It is counted among the most important collections of European art in Warsaw. The collection includes around 450 exhibits, mainly Old Masters and Impressionism .

history

The collection was brought together by Zbigniew and Janina Porczyński since 1981. For the first three years, the couple concentrated on purchasing paintings with biblical themes. Portraits and Impressionist works were added later. In 1986 the couple transferred the 400 exhibits to the Archdiocese of Warsaw and the Polish nation. The collection is managed in the form of a foundation (“Fundacja Arteks”, registered on February 27, 2002). Some of the works were shown for the first time on November 5, 1987 in Warsaw in the Museum of the Warsaw Archdiocese ( Muzeum Archidiecezji Warszawskiej ) in Ulica Solec 61 . The announcement resulted in long lines in front of the museum. A second part of the collection was presented from September 14th to December 30th, 1988.

In 1989, the beneficiaries of the Foundation, the Primate of Poland and the Polish Ministry of Art and Culture decided to create a museum to allow permanent exhibition of the collection. On July 20, 1990, Cardinal Józef Glemp and Minister Izabela Cywińska were founded. The city of Warsaw contributed the former stock exchange building , built in 1825 by Antonio Corazzi and rebuilt after the Second World War , as the exhibition center and the seat of the new museum . The collection is still located here today. It has been supplemented by another 50 paintings and sculptures over the past 20 years.

Postage stamps

On January 16, 1992, the Polish Post Office ( Poczta Polska ) issued a series of six stamps with a value of 700 to 3000 złoty , bearing the title “Arcydzieła z kolekcji im. Jana Pawła II “(German: Masterpieces of the John Paul II Collection ) wore. The stamps with print runs of 1.8 to 7 million copies feature self-portraits by:

  • Sebastien Bourdon
    (No. 3215, 700 zł)
  • Sir Joshua Reynolds
    (No. 3216, 1000 zł)
  • Sir Gottfried Kneller
    (No. 3217, 1500 zł)
  • Bartolome Esteban Murillo
    (No. 3218, 2000 zł)
  • Peter Paul Rubens
    (No. 3219, 2200 zł)
  • Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazques

criticism

Since 1987, various experts have expressed doubts about the authenticity of many of the important works in the collection. The Polish art historians Mieczysław Morka and Waldemar Łysiak published several reviews of the collection. A work signed by Alfred Sisley ( River Landscape ) is said to be a forgery by Tom Keating .

The work of the foundation as well as the transfer of the museum building to the foundation (which is partly financed by organizing commercial events on the premises) were criticized. There have been legal disputes for years over allegations of falsification and the allegation that the foundation was not financed by the public sector.

collection

The exhibition in the eight rooms of the museum used for this purpose is arranged thematically: Impressionists, mythology and allegory , portraits and self-portraits (in the two-storey hall "Rotunda"), mothers and children, portraits of Mary , biblical themes, still lifes and landscapes (in the gallery) and a room dedicated to the Polish painter Wojciech Gerson , which contains the monumental painting "Chrzest Litwy" (German: The Baptism of Lithuania ). This classification is less based on art history than on the Catholic system of values.

Artist

The majority of the collection consists of works by Italian, Dutch, Spanish and British old masters or by their employees and students. A smaller part comes from Impressionists. The represented artists include:
