Cornelis de Heem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cornelis de Heem (* 1631 in Leiden , † 1695 in Antwerp ) was a Dutch painter of still life . It can be assigned to the baroque style.

Cornelis came from a recognized and traditional family of artists who specialized in the representation of opulent arrangements of flowers, fruits and books. He was the grandson of the painter David I. de Heem (1570–1639) from Utrecht , the eldest son of Jan Davidszoon de Heem (1606–1684) , who was temporarily resident in Leiden and later settled in Antwerp, and the nephew of the Utrecht master David II. de Heem (1610-1669).

Like his considerably younger brother Jan Jansz de Heem (1650-after 1695), who subsequently emigrated to London, he worked in his father's flourishing Antwerp workshop. In 1660 he was accepted as a master in the guild of Antwerp, the city in which - apart from a stay in Leiden from 1676 to 1681 - he lived and worked throughout his life and later also his son David Corneliszoon de Heem (1663– 1718) included in the family business.

The work of Cornelis de Heem, like the entire family production, mainly includes still lifes and floral motifs. There are no dates on any of his paintings, but they can be roughly determined through art history.
