from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph Heintz (baptized June 11, 1564 in Basel , † October 15, 1609 in Prague ) was a Swiss painter and architect of the late Renaissance.

Life

Heintz was the son of Daniel Heintz the Elder and completed an apprenticeship as a painter in Basel. Possibly Hans Bock was his teacher. He later appeared in Rome from 1584–89 and in Venice from 1587–88. Emperor Rudolf II made him his court painter in Prague in 1591 . From 1598 to 1609 Heintz lived alternately in Prague and Augsburg . In Augsburg he also worked as an architect for the drafts of the baroque facade of the armory . He was raised to the nobility in 1602 .

In Basel, frescoes on the house for the dance have come down from him. In Rome he first worked as a copyist and gradually turned into a mannerist . His paintings often contain mythological and allegorical , sometimes also religious motifs. About 50 paintings and about 100 hand drawings have been preserved .

His son, Joseph Heintz the Younger (1600–1678), was also a painter who lived in Venice since 1625 at the latest. Mainly Venetian vedutas have survived from him.
