life and work

At the age of five, Bertha Wegmann and her family moved to Denmark. Her father discovered her artistic talent and began to give her lessons. In the 1860s she became a student of Heinrich Buntzen and FC Lund in Copenhagen . With the support of the Melchior family, Bertha Wegmann was able to start studying in Munich in 1867 , where she lived and worked until 1880. There she met the Swedish painter Jeanna Bauck , with whom she went on numerous study trips, including to Tyrol and Venice. Eventually they both moved to Paris . Bertha Wegmann exhibited at the Salon de Paris and received an honorable mention in 1881 and a medal for a portrait of her sister in 1882. This portrait earned her recognition on her return to Denmark and she was the first woman elected to the presidency of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts . From 1887 she was a regular member of the academy and belonged to the Charlottenborg Committee, which had previously consisted exclusively of men. In the following years she exhibited in several countries, including at the world exhibitions in 1889, 1893 and 1900. In 1892 she was one of the first women to be awarded the Ingenio et arti gold medal of merit . In 1894 she received a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition .

Bertha Wegmann died at the age of 79 in her studio on Dronningens Tværgade. She bequeathed all of her works of art to Toni Müller, who auctioned them off in 1941 for the benefit of young women artists in need.
