life and work

Son of Pieter Carelsz. called Fabritius and Barbertje Barentsdr van der Maes. Brother of Carel Fabritius and Johannes Fabritius . Barent is not identical to Barent, who was born in 1623 and who presumably died quite soon.

Like his brother Carl, Barent was probably introduced to painting through his father. Presumably around 1643 he followed his brother to Amsterdam to get in touch with Rembrandt . However, it is not known whether he became his student. The fact that Barent apparently stayed in Middenbeemster shortly afterwards speaks against it. Nevertheless, he seems to have had a connection with Rembrandt, perhaps through his brother, for his early paintings show a clear influence by him. A further stay in Amsterdam can only be documented for 1647, where he is documented as an independent painter from 1650 at the latest. On August 18, 1652, he married Catharina Mussers from Delft in Middenbeemster .

Around the same time, Barent began to break away from the sole influence of Rembrandt and came closer to his brother's new style without reaching it. As a result, most of his works appear like a link between Rembrandt and Jan Vermeer . In the mid-1950s he made new contacts in Leiden , where in 1656 he met the city architect Willem Leendertsz. van der Helm portrayed. This lucrative commission apparently prompted him to move there, because in 1657 he signed a three-year lease there. Nevertheless, he only becomes a member of the local Guild of St. Luke in May of the following year. As early as 1658 he left Leiden and stayed alternately in Middenbeemster and Amsterdam. Nevertheless, he maintains his contacts in Leiden and in 1661 is paid for a commissioned work for the Lutheran Church there. In 1663 there was another short stay in Leiden before he settled again in Middenbeemster, where he stayed until at least 1669. He then moved to Amsterdam again, where he was buried on October 20, 1673 in the Leidse Kerkhof. He left six children.
