Pieter Carelsz. called Fabritius (* around 1598 in Westwoud ; † 1653 in Middenbeemster ) was a Dutch painter.

resume

He was the eldest son of Carel Pietersz. and Anna Jansdr. The little-known artist is the father of Carel Fabritius and his brother Barent Fabritius . According to the father's wishes, he should follow in his footsteps and become a pastor. But since his father's income was insufficient to study theology at the university, Pieter decided to become a schoolmaster in the Beemster community. As such, he was employed there on November 24, 1619 with a salary of 80 guilders a year. From 1620 he also took over the office of sexton and was also the cantor of the Reformed community there. For this he asked for a raise in salary of 20 guilders and at the same time applied for permission to use his free time to practice painting. Both requests were approved. It is unlikely that this was just a hobby, as he would not have had to apply for it. He must have connected higher ambitions with this request and was most likely instrumental in the fact that three of his sons, Carel, Barent and Johannes , also decided on a career as a painter. Around 1621 he married Barbertje Barentsdr van der Maes, with whom he had eleven children.
