Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Bauerle (born June 5, 1831 in Endersbach , now part of Weinstadt ; † August 26, 1912 in Aichelberg in the Black Forest , now part of Bad Wildbad ) was a painter who gained international fame as a portrait painter at German courts and later at the British Attained court of Queen Victoria .

Life

Little has been published about Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Bauerle (also: Carl Bauerle / Bowerley). He led an eventful life that was shaped by his faith ( Pietism ), his artistic talent, his love for children and personal setbacks.

Born in Endersbach in the Remstal / Kingdom of Württemberg , Karl Bauerle emigrated with his parents by sailing ship to the United States of America in 1836 at the age of five , where his parents then lived as farmers. There the talented boy learned the trade of copperplate engraver from his uncle in Cincinnati .

"In 1859 he returned to Germany and became a student at the art school in Stuttgart under Rustige's direction ."

- Dr. Hermann Alex. Müller : Biographical Artist Lexicon , 1882

His training as a portrait and genre painter was made possible by a grant from King Wilhelm I of Württemberg .

As a portrait painter he worked for the princes of Hohenlohe-Langenburg , who recommended him to their royal relatives. He was founded by Albert Eduard von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha (1841-1910; called "Bertie"), the Prince of Wales (Albert Edward Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Prince of Wales ) and later King Edward VII of Great Britain and Ireland and Emperor of India, called to Great Britain to do portraits of the royal family. Especially portraits of children are Bauerle's trademark. Some pictures of princes and families from the British court can be seen in the museum of Sandringham House . He had lived with his family in London since 1870 , where after only six months his first wife, Amalie Irion, died giving birth to their fifth child.

In 1872 and 1873 the family was temporarily in Stuttgart and to relax in Schaffhausen in Switzerland , where that little son who was born in London died of scarlet fever . In the spring of 1873, Karl Bauerle married his second wife, Mathilde, geb. Erhardt and finally moved with the family to London. He became a British citizen in 1876. "The number of three surviving siblings from the first marriage increased by five more over time ... two siblings each (from the first and second marriage) died at a tender age." (From the curriculum vitae of Wilhelm Konrad Bauerle, 3rd . Son from 1st marriage, born 1867, pastor in Württemberg).

Since June 1, 1900, he lived with his son (Karl) Theodor Bauerle for several years in the summer in Hülben in the " Villa ", the former studio building of Carl (Theodor) Bubeck, which the pietistic schoolmaster Johannes Kullen had inherited. He portrayed this teacher several times. In nearby Urach (Württemberg), today Bad Urach , he worked together with his son Theodor in 1900/1901 on the design of the Amandus Church, named after St. Amandus of Maastricht, in the neo-Gothic " interpreting style ".

Children and family

Three children followed in their father's footsteps and became artists: Karl Theodor Bauerle from his first marriage became a church painter and often worked closely with his father on large wall paintings. From her second marriage, Amalie Bauerle became very well known as an Art Nouveau children's book illustrator and Martha Bauerle also as a book and calendar illustrator.
