Marinus van Reymerswaele
Marinus van Reymerswaele (* around 1497 in Reimerswaal , † 1567 in Goes ) was a Flemish painter during the Renaissance .
Life
Marinus was the son of a member of the Antwerp Painters' Guild , where he was obviously influenced by Quentin Massys . However, he mostly stayed elsewhere during his career. After leaving Reimerswaal , he went to Middelburg . He was punished there in 1567 for participating in the looting of Westminster Church and later exiled. Marinus is known for his pictures of Saint Jerome and for his depictions of bankers, usurers and tax collectors in exaggerated fashion clothes, which he carefully painted in detail. These embodiments of greed were very popular and earned him prestige as far as Italy and Spain .
