Prayer book (rallying)

The front of a "prayer book" or also called a "road book"

The prayer book , even pace notes , English Pace rating is in rally -Sports a book of records of the special stages (WP). They are created through exploratory trips before the actual competition.

In a rally, you first make an exploratory drive over the route and log it. The driver dictates special features of the route to the co-pilot. The record that is created in this way contains characteristic data about events on the route, such as the course and length of route sections, curve radii and course, jumps and compressions (valleys), surface properties and changes, light-shadow relationships and the like. In addition, it records the driving data, such as possible speeds, gear changes, braking distances and the difficulty of the point. During the rally itself, the co- driver transmits this data to the driver via the on-board radio in uninterrupted sequence (hence the name “prayer book”) so that he is prepared and can act with foresight.

Open road book

The first prayer book was used at the Carrera Panamericana in November 1952 by the German racing driver Hans Klenk for his driver Karl Kling - at the time with a sensational course record. This is purely team-internal data, the recording systems are quite different and are also regarded as closely guarded secrets. The word Aufschrieb was then German-spread since the 60s, in the international sports language is English Pace note , Route Note 'or generally roadbook usual.

Communication on the basis of the notes requires excellent interaction between the two crew members and, in this sense, makes rallying a team sport . The prayer book is one of the main tasks of the copilot, which relieves the driver in the context of a rally.

Shortly before the start, gravel spies (including gravel crews) are often deployed to check the route again, especially with regard to gravel, ice and moisture, and update or optimize the records.
