Birthplace of Nikolaus von Kues

The house where Nikolaus von Kues was born is a listed building on Nikolausufer 49 in the Kues district of the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Bernkastel-Kues .

History and architecture

In 1401 the German philosopher, theologian and mathematician Nikolaus von Kues was born in the house . The building no longer has its former shape. It was completely renovated in 1570 as a Renaissance building and built over the foundation walls of the original building. The hipped roof, crenellated crown, stair tower and the ground floor with barrel vaults were reconstructed in the style of late Gothic town houses.

After it belonged to the property of the St. Nikolaus Hospital until 1681 , it came back into private ownership. In the 1970s, the Cusanus Society acquired the building, which had been in decline until then, and renovated it, with the building dating from 1570 being the benchmark.

Current usage

It is currently owned by the city of Bernkastel-Kues and is used by the Cusanus Society as a permanent museum and event room.
