Cross from Eikelhof

The Eikelhof Memorial Cross is a stone floor cross in Eikelhof in the province of Overijssel in the Netherlands . It was built in 1393 for a man who suddenly died on the way. There is an inscription on the cross:

In the year d (es) Mr. M.CCC and XCIII on Thursday after (ch) Sankt Michaelis died H (err) Johalvedens pray for his soul

In addition, a coat of arms was engraved, which is badly weathered.

The passers-by were supposed to pray for the salvation of his soul, since he no longer received the sacraments of death. Memorial crosses and atonement crosses were erected throughout Central and Western Europe for people who suddenly died as a result of accidents or manslaughter.
