Memorial stone Red Sailors 1918
The memorial stone Red sailors is a memorial stone and garden monument in the park cemetery Marzahn in Berlin district of Marzahn of Marzahn-Hellersdorf .
history
The brothers Fritz and Albert Gast were sailors in the Navy . They took part in the workers 'and soldiers' uprisings in 1919 and also in the Spartacus uprising in January, which was bloodily suppressed. In addition, there were widespread unrest in Germany in March and April 1919. After these events, after a failed general strike with nine other workers, soldiers and sailors from voluntary corps , the Gast brothers were caught. They were shot dead on March 12, 1919 in Lichtenberger Möllendorffstrasse at the old cemetery wall.
The two brothers are lying in the Marzahn park cemetery on the southern crossroad of Department 2d. On August 18, 1957, the original gravestone was replaced by a new lime memorial stone. The sculptor who designed the new memorial stone is not known. A clenched fist can be seen on the new memorial stone , one of the oldest symbols of the labor movement. It bears the following inscription on the memorial stone: In memory of the sailors, brothers Fritz and Albert Gast, murdered on March 12 by the Lüttwitz Freikorps .
