Gedeon Romandon

Gedeon Romandon (* 1667 in Venice , † 1697 in Berlin ) was a court painter to the Brandenburg Elector Friedrich Wilhelm ("the great Elector") and his son Friedrich III. (later: King Friedrich I. ).
origin
Gedeon Romandon was a son of the French painter Abraham Romandon, who can be traced back to Venice in 1663. As a Huguenot , he fled France after 1685 and came to Berlin with his family in 1686. Working in Berlin
Romandon introduced a French-influenced, festive and dignified sublimity to portrait painting in Berlin. Lively facial expressions and gestures as well as a lively, abstract treatment of the robes are characteristic of his portraits. The painter Samuel Theodor Gericke is named as one of his students .
Romandon's position at court is characterized by the fact that he was commissioned to produce the official portrait of Frederick III. to paint after he took office as elector. In 1690 Romandon traveled to London on behalf of the Elector to be there for Frederick III. Making portraits of members of the British royal family. In 1696 Gedeon Romandon became professor at the newly founded Berlin Academy of the Arts .
Most of his surviving works can be found today in Charlottenburg Palace , Berlin, and in the New Palace in Sanssouci Park , Potsdam.
