The dangerous goods train , sometimes also dangerous goods train or environmental protection train , is a tactical unit of the fire brigade , which often emerged from earlier ABC trains . Its primary task is to provide technical assistance after accidents involving dangerous goods . It is neither standardized nor regulated by national regulations. In Germany, however, it is usually made up of a command vehicle that transports the train crew and several equipment vehicles on which the equipment is loaded. A group is with a fire fighting vehiclepromoted. Another group is divided into several teams on the trolley dangerous , equipment car respiratory protection / radiation protection and decontamination multipurpose vehicle or the decontamination truck persons on. The determination of the respective dangerous goods is often done by another team on the measuring vehicle (for example CBRN exploration vehicle ). Depending on the situation, such a train is supported by a wide variety of fire fighting vehicles .

Since these highly specialized vehicles are very expensive, the actual hazardous goods trains usually only exist in larger cities or industrial companies. In rural regions, these trains often only exist theoretically, as their individual components are often distributed over the fire departments of several communities or even an entire district . In the event of an emergency, certain local fire brigades are alerted, which approach the scene separately (so-called rendezvous system ). The hazardous goods trains are often only manned by part of the fire brigade staff who have received additional specialist training; It was not uncommon for these to be young men who had committed themselves to disaster control until their military service was suspended .

In addition to these specialists who occupy the equipment vehicles, the relevant fire brigade is always deployed, which also provides the fire fighting vehicle for the hazardous substance train. However, the work of the local fire brigade often only consists of securing the site of action, ensuring fire protection or other general tasks.

Since one does not speak of hazardous substance in Austria, but of pollutant , the fire brigade unit that is deployed in a pollutant accident is called a pollutant train . In Austria, too, this pollutant train is more or less only theoretical, since the pollutant vehicles and decontamination vehicles are not always stationed here at the same fire brigade. As in Germany, the hazardous substance-specific hazard prevention is carried out by specialists, while the all-round work is carried out by the local fire brigade with other helpers.

In most cases, the hazardous substance train takes care of the people, picks up the hazardous substance, refills it or prevents it from spreading. This profile of activities is extended to ensure fire protection and - depending on requirements and legal situation - to measures of security, exploration / hazardous substance analysis, warning the population, evacuation of the same, technical assistance and decontamination . The removal and disposal of contaminated items and the hazardous substance itself are regularly carried out by private specialist companies.
