The spotted Dung beetle ( Aphodius distinctus , Syn. : Chilothorax distinctus ) is a beetle from the family of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae).
Characteristics of the beetle
The elongated oval and very flattened beetles have a body length of 4.5–6 mm. The head and pronotum are black. The wing-coverts, which are colored brown-yellow, have a pattern of several larger black spots. They are also provided with several longitudinal rows of small depressions.
distribution
The spotted dung beetle occurs in the western Palearctic (Europe, Asia Minor, Central Asia). The species is also represented in the British Isles. The beetle species was introduced into North America and has now spread widely there. They are found in forests and on dry forest edges.
Way of life
The beetles are particularly common in spring and autumn. The beetles live detritivor , that is, they feed on decomposing organic material such as manure (all types of droppings, especially horse droppings), carrion or rotting parts of plants.
