Opposite driving
The Gegenortvortrieb refers to a process of the tunnel - and mining . With this method, the straightening tunnel is driven from both ends of the tunnel to be created with the aim of meeting in the rock halfway through the path. Driving in the opposite direction was already practiced in ancient times , for example in the case of the Eupalinos tunnel , but still involves considerable risks if the two directional tunnels miss each other. The large alpine tunnels of the railway were and are built using this method. In mining, it is used when driving cross-passages to connect mines underground .
