Bob Thaves
Robert Thaves (born October 5, 1924 - August 1, 2006 in Torrance ) was an American comic artist . He became known through the two comic characters Frank and Ernest (German Frank and Ernst ), which he invented in 1972.
Life
Even as a child he knew he wanted to be a cartoonist and began to study the work of others and to draw himself. He was trained so that, without paying attention to the signature, he could recognize the author when looking at a comic. While in college he got his first magazines to draw for these comics. He studied psychology at the University of Minnesota and graduated in 1950. He later worked as a psychologist while inventing Frank and Ernest . In Germany, his stories have only appeared in 1988 in the Eichborn Verlag , Frankfurt am Main, under the title Frank and Ernst. Laughter in the Park (original title: Frank and Ernest ) in the translation by Adolf Heinzlmeier and Deborah Griggs ( ISBN 3-8218-1873-5 ).
Bob Thaves died on August 1, 2006 at the age of 81.
Awards
With Frank and Ernest , Thaves has won several awards, including the National Cartoonist Society Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award in 1983, 1984 and 1986, and the Mencken Award for Best Comic in 1985; he was voted Punster of the Year in 1990.
