Regulates Measurement of walking noise on floors in the test bench
Brief description Method for measuring the noises emitted by a ceiling support on a reference concrete ceiling when excited by a standard hammer mill
Latest edition 2013

Walking noise is the sound created by using a floor that can be heard in the same room. When walking, the walking noise is generated by the impact of the heel edge of the shoe on the floor, and secondary to the front sole as well as grinding noises.

Footfall sound must be differentiated from the concept of impact sound introduced in building acoustics , which describes the sound perceived in other rooms (only through structure-borne sound transmission). It should be noted that in many commercial impact sound insulating materials no direct, simple relationship between impact sound reduction and Gehschallreduktion there. Impact sound insulation is a measure in the sub-floor structure, i.e. a structural problem, walking sound insulation is one of the floor covering , thus one of the room furnishings .

A standard for a uniform measurement of walking noise was requested from the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and adopted in 2010 with EN 16205 . This document EN 16205 Measurement of walking noise on floors in the test bench specifies a method for measuring the noises emitted by a ceiling support on a reference concrete ceiling when excited by a standard hammer mill . The noise is measured in the room in which the ceiling pad is located and the excitation takes place.
