Geiami: Looking at a waterfall

Geiami ( Japanese 芸 阿 弥 , actually Nakao Shingei (中 尾 真 芸), another stage name : Gakusō (学 叟); born 1431 ; died December 8, 1485 ) was a Japanese monk - painter of the Muromachi period .

life and work

Geiami was the son of Nōami (能 阿 弥), and like his father, he used a name ending in ami . And like his father, he worked for the Shogunate as Dōbōshū (同 朋 衆), with the task of looking after the works of Chinese origin. He had a great talent for poetry, for drawing up pictures and interior decorations with pictures. Geiami was also active as a painter, as evidenced by his work "観 瀑 図" (Kambaku to, viewing a waterfall), which he bequeathed to his pupil Shōkei in 1480 .

This picture shows a somewhat stiff composition based on the pictures of the academic painters during the Southern Song Dynasty . Pictures from the collection of Chinese works owned by the shogunate served as models. Geiami was also based on the Japanese Japanese painter Shūbun .
