Geitau

The Geitau (or shortly Gei ) is a rope , which serves Rahsegel "clew up" ( to reef ), so the Rah zoom pull in folds (Brooken) to the wind to be no attack. The Geitau is attached to the lower corners of a generally rectangular square sail in the clew located there , then runs along the side leeches of the square sail to the Rahnock of the yard directly above and is then guided to the mast and then to the deck via pulleys, so that it can be operated from there. In the case of topsails , the Geitau can also consist of a chain.

The counterpart to the Geitau is the sheet with which a square sail is set. The sheet is also guided to the mast via pulleys and then onto the deck.

As a rule, each square sail has a geitau and a sheet on both sides ( starboard and port ). The Geitau is part of the running estate of a rigged sailing ship.
