Gel bleeding

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gel bleeding is a complication of implanted silicone prostheses in the female breast. It is a diffusion of the silicone into the environment with an intact shell of the prosthesis, i.e. without rupture of the implant shell.

Diagnosis

The gel bleeding can be diagnosed by an ultrasound scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast. Extensive gel bleeding is also found during revision surgery . Gel bleeding and implant ruptures (cracks) often do not cause any symptoms.
