The Gelderse derby is a clash between the Dutch football clubs Vitesse Arnheim and NEC Nijmegen . Both clubs are the largest clubs in the Gelderland province . While Gelderse derby mostly refers to the encounters between Vitesse and NEC, the term can occasionally also mean games by one of the two teams against De Graafschap from Doetinchem . In the past, however, it referred to encounters between Vitesse Arnheim and the then even more popular Nijmegener Club Quick 1888 .

Since the first meeting in 1916 there have been 116 games, 38 of which the Arnhem club won. Another 35 games ended in a draw, while the NEC won 43 games.

history

On March 18, 1923, the first league game between the two clubs took place in Nijmegen. With two goals from Gerrit Langeler Vitesse Arnheim was able to win the game 2-1. In the past there were riots due to the rivalry, in the last editions the duel with accompanying measures and police operations was classified in the highest risk category. In May 1993 De Goffert - NEC's stadium - was used by Vitesse both on May 16 in the 1-1 draw against Feyenoord Rotterdam and on May 23 in the 1-0 draw against PSV Eindhoven . More than 20,000 spectators came to the last game. The rivalry between the two clubs only arose with the rise of the Arnhemers in the 1980s and 1990s under the leadership of the club's president Karel Aalbers. NEC supporters condemned the fact that Vitesse Arnhem was supported with state funds, among other things.

After Vitesse was able to reduce debts in the 2007/08 season - with the help of the city of Arnhem - tensions between the clubs intensified; The takeover of Vitesse by the Georgian investor Merab Jordania in 2010 also contributed to this. One of the lows of recent times has been the riot between NEC supporters and the police in Nijmegen following the clash between the two teams during the 2011/12 season . During a game in the play-offs in Arnhem that same season, NEC goalkeeper Gábor Babos had to calm the crowd. The cities of Arnhem, Nijmegen and the police threatened not to forbid fans of the opposing team to participate in the joint games for the next three years if there were further riots. Vitesse fans were furious about it. The next game went quietly, also because of a 4-1 win by Vitesse, so that the fans of both clubs were admitted to the games. As a result of NEC's relegation from the Eredivisie, the Arnhem fans had placed a sign on the Waalbrug in Nijmegen with the following sentence: “ Eredivisievoetbal, nog vijftien kilometer ” (meaning: “First division football still 15 kilometers away”). A year later, NEC managed to rise again and the supporters let a plane fly over Arnhem and the Vitesse stadium, where a banner hung with the following sentence: We're back, See you soon . (Like: "We are back, see you soon.")
