Joint toilette is the generic term for various, mostly arthroscopy performed surgery on a diseased joint .
The term is derived from the expression making toilet for 'cleaning', 'cleaning'. In addition to smoothing roughened cartilage layers, this includes removing calcium deposits, cutting smooth torn meniscus tissue , removing the remains of torn ligaments or removing free joint bodies. At the shoulder it is often necessary to remove osteophytes that have grown down from the shoulder joint.
