The Church of St. Gérard is a Roman Catholic church in Vršac in Serbia . It is dedicated to St. Gerhard Sagredo , who u. a. proselytized in today's Banat , founded the diocese of Csanád and was its first bishop. The Church of St. Gérard is now the largest Roman Catholic church in Serbia and is considered the largest Gellert Church after that in Budapest .

history

The first church was built by the Danube Swabians in 1726 . The new church was built in the neo-Gothic style from 1860–1863 according to the plans of an unknown Viennese architect . The church is a three-aisled basilica with a Latin cross as a floor plan. It is about 61 m long, 22 m wide and the interior height is 19.50 m, the towers are 63 m high. The portal, windows, rosettes and bell towers are richly decorated. The altarpiece was created by Peter Johann Geiger from the Vienna Art Academy.
