history

The gas supply in Kamen was established in 1865, the water supply in 1888, and the electricity supply in 1921. On January 1, 1989, the Stadtwerke GmbH was founded - initially as a company owned by the city of Kamen.

In 1994 it became apparent that the concession contracts with the United Electricity Works Westphalia (VEW) would expire and should not be extended. With the aim of using synergies, minimizing losses and increasing profits, GSW Gemeinschaftstadtwerke GmbH Kamen, Bönen, Bergkamen was founded - a supply company for three municipalities with around 125,000 inhabitants. The construct: the cities of Bergkamen and Kamen have a 42 percent stake in the municipal utilities, the municipality of Bönen holds 16 percent of the shares. The partnership agreement was certified in December 1994. The VEW initially continued to supply the electrical energy, but the GSW distributed it. In addition, several leisure facilities of the shareholder communities as well as the former Kamen public utility were transferred to the new company. GSW currently maintains two outdoor pools, four indoor pools, a small swimming pool and a sauna.

In 1999 the gas network concessions in Bergkamen and Bönen were transferred to GSW. In the same year, the company entered the telecommunications business with the establishment of the GSWcom sales company . GSW has been operating the district heating network in Bergkamen-Mitte and -Weddinghofen since 2003 . The coupling of electricity and heat generation is used by GSW in its four combined heat and power units (CHP).

GSW has been involved in various companies since 2005 and in the following years - for example in the Trianel public utility network , which was founded in 1999 as a joint venture between public utilities, municipal and regional utilities. While the GSW in the urban area of Kamen-Mitte has always been responsible for the supply of drinking water, it has also been in Bergkamen, Bönen and the Kamener districts since 2010. With the founding of GSW Wasser-plus GmbH, they supply the people there together with GELSENWASSER AG.

The electricity network concession contracts with the municipalities ended at the end of 2014, but the GSW successfully applied for the new network concessions. The new contracts came into force on January 1, 2015 and run for 20 years. Street lighting also remains the responsibility of GSW.
