General Catalog of Variable Stars

The General Catalog of Variable Stars (GCVS, Russian : Общий каталог переменных звёзд ) is a star catalog of variable stars .

The GCVS was first published in 1948 by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the Sternberg Institute of Astronomy at Moscow's Lomonosov University with 10,820 named variable stars in the galactic field. The second version was published in 1968 and the third version in 1985-1987. It contains 40,215 entries in three volumes (as of 2010), with 11,844 new variable stars being added to the namelist .

The fourth volume contains the references to variable stars and the fifth volume 10,979 variables in extragalactic systems such as the Magellanic Clouds , Andromeda Galaxy etc.
