The Generic Mapping Tools ( GMT ) are a collection of free software for creating geological or geographical maps and diagrams .

Topographic map (Germany 2006), created with GMT

GMT provides tools to edit x, y and x, y, z records - e.g. B. by rasterizing , filtering or different types of map projection . An extensive collection of freely usable GIS data is supplied, which contains coastlines , rivers , political borders and the coordinates of other geographical objects. Additional data ( satellite images , digital terrain models, etc.) can be converted and imported from other sources. The resulting maps and diagrams are output in encapsulated PostScript format (EPS).

The system is optimized for use from the command line to enable automatic batch processing . More or less extensive graphical user interfaces are offered by third parties such as B. the Interactive Mapping of Geoscientific Datasets (iGMT). There are also web applications through which the functionality of the system can be made available online.
