Gene transfer
The transfer of genes from one organism to another is called gene transfer . A distinction is made between:
- Passing on of genetic material from an individual to an offspring: vertical gene transfer (VGT).
- Transfer from one organism to another already existing: lateral or horizontal gene transfer (LGT or HGT)
- Transfer of genetic material from an endosymbiont ( chloroplast , mitochondrion, etc.) to the nucleus of the eukaryotic cell ( host cell ) containing it up to total loss: endosymbiotic gene transfer (EGT) - see also chloroplast §Endosymbiotic gene transfer
- Acquisition of genetic material from a dead organism, see Anachronistic Evolution
