Geological organs
Geological organs are vertical, tube-like cavities that are created by the weathering of soft, fine-grained material.
There are everywhere in the Alpine Ice Age gravel fields. Examples of this are between Wolfertschwenden and Ottobeuren near the hamlet of Bossarts in the Unterallgäu district , near Oberschroffen, the municipality of Unterneukirchen in the Altötting district in Bavaria or in Helpfau-Uttendorf in Upper Austria .
description
The geological organs were created during the Günz glacial period around 600,000 years ago or later ice ages. B. the Mindel cold period . Carbonic acid rainwater has dissolved the limestone in some places and thus formed the funnel-shaped tubes, some of which are up to 15 meters high. The name organ for this natural monument is derived from the tubes that line up like organ pipes. The geological organs in Bossarts and Oberschroffen are registered as geotopes at the Bavarian State Office for the Environment; those in Oberschroffen and Baierbrunn climbing garden are among the 100 most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria .
