Georg Christian Luther

Georg Christian Luther (* 1717 in Breslau , Silesia ; †  1800 in Tallinn , Estonia Governorate ) was a Silesian-Estonian businessman and entrepreneur.

Entrepreneurship

Georg Christian Luther was born as the son of Philipp Wilhelm Luther (1683–1763) and Anna Sophia Luther, née Stein, (1693–1777) in the Silesian town of Breslau.

In 1742 he moved from Breslau to Tallinn, which had become part of the Russian Empire in 1721 .

Luther initially traded in linen and salt. The family business later started importing and exporting wood.

The company enjoyed great economic success. Luther's son, the merchant and later Tallinn mayor Christian Wilhelm Luther (the elder) (1774–1841), successfully continued his father's company.

The family business grew by trading in building materials and manufacturing furniture to become one of the largest in Estonia until the Second World War .

Private life

Georg Christian Luther was his first marriage to Gerdrutha Elisabeth Luther, born in Tallinn. Nottbeck, (1720–1770) married, second marriage to Tallinn Maria Helene Luther, b. Lohmann, (1748-1835). With her, Luther had a daughter and five sons. The two most famous were the entrepreneur Christian Wilhelm Luther senior. (1774–1841), who continued his father's company, and the businessman and journalist Dietrich Martin Luther (1772–1861), who published the Reval Weekly News from 1807 to 1852 .
