Dietrich Martin Luther

Dietrich Martin Luther (born July 8 . Jul / 19th July  1772 greg. In Tallinn , Governorate of Estonia , † November 12 . Jul / 24. November  1861 . Greg Tallinn) was a Baltic German merchant, notary, publisher and journalist.

Life and journalism

Luther was born as the son of the Silesian-Estonian entrepreneur Georg Christian Luther (1717–1800) in Tallinn (German Reval ). One of his brothers was the merchant Christian Wilhelm Luther senior. (1774–1841), who continued the father's company and developed it into one of the leading companies in Estonia at the time.

From 1807 to 1852 Luther published the German-language newspaper Revalsche Weekly News in Tallinn , which had been founded in 1772. He remained active as a newspaper editor until the end of his life. He was a senior man in the Tallinn Great Guild.

Private life

Dietrich Martin Luther was with Marianne Johanna Luther, geb. Hörschelmann, (1789–1847) married. She came from a well-known family of scholars and theologians. Luther's father-in-law was the Tallinn professor Ernst August Wilhelm Hörschelmann (1743–1795), who was editor of the Revalische Weekly News from 1772 until his death .

Dietrich Martin Luther and his wife had six sons and five daughters, most of whom had an influence on the intellectual history of Estonia in the 19th century:
