Robert Johann Dietrich Luther

Robert Johann Dietrich Luther (* 23 September July / 5 October  1816 greg. In Tallinn , Estonia Governorate ; † 21 February July / 4 March  1888 greg. Ibid) was a German-Baltic Lutheran theologian.

Life and theology

Luther was born the son of the influential journalist, publisher and senior man of the Great Guild Dietrich Martin Luther (1772–1861) in Tallinn (German Reval). His grandfather was the Silesian-Estonian entrepreneur Georg Christian Luther (1717–1800).

Luther attended a private school until 1823. From 1824 to 1834 he went to the renowned Tallinn Gouvernements-Gymnasium . From 1825 to 1841 Luther studied theology at the University of Tartu (then Imperial University of Dorpat ). Between 1835 and 1837 he was also enrolled in medicine.

After his studies, Luther worked as a private tutor , most recently with the pastor from Ambla ( traffic light ), Alexander Leopold Paulsen (1804–1877). He also spent his ecclesiastical probationary year in Ambla before he was ordained a clergyman on March 9, 1847.

From 1847 to April 1888 Luther was pastor of the Lutheran parish of Jüri , today's rural community of Rae .

Robert Johann Dietrich Luther is best known today for his work on the German-Estonian entrepreneur and pastor dynasty Luther, which he published together with the writer Karl Rußwurm (1812–1883). It was published in 1883 under the title Genealogia Lutherorum rediviva, or, News about the Luther Family in Estonia and Russia.
