Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Rußwurm , owner: Carl Rußwurm , also: Carl Friedrich Wilhelm (born November 25, 1812 in Domhof Ratzeburg ; † February 5, July / February 17,  1883 greg. In Reval ) was a German-Estonian pedagogue, ethnologist and historians.

life and work

Carl Rußwurm came from a family of theologians and educators. His father Johann Georg Rußwurm (1781–1848) was the rector of the cathedral school at the Ratzeburg Cathedral at the time of his birth and later the pastor of the St. Marien Church (Selmsdorf) , his uncle Johann Wilhelm Bartholomäus Rußwurm was a pastor in Herrnburg . His younger brother Johannes (1814–1890) later became provost of the cathedral in Ratzeburg.

After attending the cathedral school, he studied theology in Bonn and Berlin . In 1831 he became a member of the Populonia Bonn fraternity and in 1832 a member of the Kränzchenverein Berlin . In order to avoid investigations by the authorities because of his participation in the fraternity, he went to Estonia in 1835, initially as a private teacher . Here he was appointed inspector of the Knights and Cathedral School in Reval in 1839 . In 1841 he moved to the health resort of Hapsal , where he initially worked as a teacher and later as an inspector of the local district school. After his retirement in 1868 he worked on scientific work and returned to Reval, where he held the position of archivist at the Estonian knight chancellery. He dealt mainly with Estonian cultural history and ethnography and the genealogy of German-Baltic families. In Hapsal, his most important work, Eibofolke, or the Swedes on the Esthland coast and on Runö , was created through research into the local residents of Swedish origin , for which he received the prestigious Demidow Prize .
