life and work

Johann Wilhelm Bartholomäus Rußwurm was a son of the organist and Mägdelein school clerk Johann Lorenz Rußwurm in Seebergen in the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and his wife Elisabeth Barbara, nee. Solz, from Breitenheerda . The Rußwurm family has been in Seebergen since around 1678 and has been a shepherd and shepherd there for several generations.

After attending grammar school in Rudolstadt until 1792, he studied theology at the University of Göttingen . His first job was as cantor of the cathedral school at Ratzeburg Cathedral , later as its vice-principal. He married Sophia Friederica Catharina Hermann on November 30, 1800 in Ratzeburg (born May 28, 1769 in Ratzeburg, † November 19, 1847 in Herrnburg). The marriage remained childless. In 1809 he was appointed pastor of the Herrnburg village church , which at that time belonged to the Principality of Ratzeburg within the (partial) Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz .

In Herrnburg, Rußwurm turned away from the rationalism of his student days and opened up to influences from awakening and romanticism , together with his brother Johann Georg Rußwurm (1781–1848), pastor of Selmsdorf , and pastor Saalfeld in Kirch Grambow, now part of Wedendorf . Not least because of his pastoral work, he experienced an upswing in community life. The number of annual communicants (participants in the Last Supper ) in Herrnburg rose from 1419 to 1861 in 1814–1841.

Russwurm also developed a lively journalistic activity, so he wrote over 36 different treatises and essays, mostly of theological and pedagogical content. His Musical Altar Agende from 1826, which was in use in the parishes of the Ratzeburg region until the end of the 19th century, had the greatest aftereffect .

He was honored with the title of Council of Churches both by Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and later by Mecklenburg-Strelitz . A historical portrait of Rußwurm hangs in the chancel of the Herrnburg Church.

His brother Johann Georg Rußwurm, who was eleven years his junior, was a pastor in Selmsdorf . His daughter Wilhelmina Charlotta Friedericka Georgina remarried in Seebergen in 1838 . His son Johannes Rußwurm was provost in Ratzeburg Cathedral .
