The Georg Kraus Foundation is a non-profit foundation for development cooperation based in Hagen . The founder Hans-Georg Kraus once said: “We don't need projects that cost millions, but millions of small projects that improve the living conditions of the local people!” The foundation exclusively supports small, manageable local projects that benefit the local people benefit directly. According to the statutes, the foundation promotes development cooperation, in particular for local projects through professionally suitable organizations. The aim is to (co-) finance smaller projects in developing countries, to cover the costs of deploying the appropriate specialist staff, and to enable related education and science measures.
Emergence
The foundation was established in 1997 by Anne and Hans-Georg Kraus. She is the successor to the "Society for the Promotion of Concrete Development Projects" (GFE) founded by Wikinger Reisen , which was founded in the 1980s and 1990s as an e. V. annually supported small local projects in the so-called "Third World" mainly in Asia and South America from donations from guests, tour guides and employees of the company Wikinger GmbH . With the establishment of the foundation, it was decided to expand international development cooperation with the unchanged goal of investing the necessary funds locally in cooperation with the local residents. With the departure of the Wikinger founder Hans-Georg Kraus from the management at the turn of the millennium and the transfer of 20% of the capital shares to the foundation as well as further financial contributions, the foundation experienced a considerable upswing and was now able to achieve its goals on a larger scale. Assets are permanently added to the foundation assets of GKS through endowments. The GKS co-manages the dependent foundation. The proceeds are used to support one or more own projects in the Third World. In 2014, the dependent Hartmut Papke Foundation was donated to GKS as a special fund. 100% of donations to the GKS go to the development projects. Erich G. Fritz , a member of the German Bundestag from 1990 to 2013, has been chairman of the foundation since spring 2014 .
Goals of the foundation
International development cooperation
The motto is "The best way out of poverty is the way to school". Accordingly, educational measures for women, children and young people are being promoted. Helping people to help themselves is the principle and that, according to the Foundation, education is the only way out of poverty . Women are given particular support to enable them to feed their families on a long-term basis.
Promotion of communication in old age - "Not alone and not in the home"
The foundation supports the formation of active house communities where togetherness is cultivated and all residents can contribute their experiences. This community promotes a good, lively neighborhood and thus prevents loneliness and anonymity. With mutual support in everyday life and, where necessary, with external professional help, most residents can stay in their own apartment for a long time, even if they need help or are disabled. The foundation maintains its own project in the center of Solingen-Wald with 17 residential units for singles and couples with a common room with kitchen as a meeting point. Another project in the center of Hagen (on the Elbersufer) has been completed and was inaugurated in autumn 2011. The foundation provides a freelancer for both projects in order to stimulate an active and harmonious house community.
Foundation ambassador organization
In 2009 a nationwide ambassador organization was founded, which currently maintains regional groups in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Hagen, Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Munich. These volunteer people bring the foundation's idea of “We all live in one world” to the public through activities such as chess championships, cultural image lectures or hikes for a good cause. The ambassadors are offered project trips to visit projects on site in developing countries. Activities such as B. set up cultural activities, carried out various hikes for a good cause, held photography lectures on regional history, organized information stands, offered game competitions and much more developed and carried out.

The foundation currently supports 44 local projects in 29 countries around the world. There are currently projects on the African continent in Ethiopia, Burundi, Ivory Coast, Eritrea, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Kenya, Nali, Morocco, Rwanda, Senegal, South Sudan, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
