George Chauncey

George Chauncey (* 1954 ) is an American historian.

After finishing school, Chauncey studied history at Yale University and received his Ph.D. in 1989. From 1991 to 2006 he taught history at the University of Chicago . In 2006, he moved to Yale University as Professor of 20th Century American History and Lesbian and Gay History. He has been teaching at Columbia University since 2017 .

His main work, Gay New York , was awarded the Los Angeles Times Book Prize , among others . “An unbelievable amount”, wrote Didier Eribon , thanks to Chauncey's “moving book”.
