George Lawrence Stone

George Lawrence Stone ( 1886 - November 19, 1967 ) was an American drummer and drum teacher . He was the son of George Burt Stone, also a drummer. He got his first contact with music through him, but also through work in his father's instrument factory. When he died he took over the company and became director of the Stone Drum and Xylophone School in Boston .

George Lawrence studied with Harry A. Bowers and Frank E. Dodge and studied with Oscar Schwar of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He also learned music theory at the New England Conservatory of Music. In 1910 he became a xylophone player on the Keith Vaudeville Circuit.

Stone was one of the founding members of the National Association of Rudimental Drummers (NARD), founded in 1933 and chaired for 15 years.

He is also the author of Stick Control for the Snare Drummer (1935) and Accents and Rebounds for the Snare Drummer (1961).

Among his students were influential drummers such as Joe Morello , Gene Krupa , Lionel Hampton and Vic Firth .
