George H. McCracken

George Herbert McCracken Jr. (* 1936 ) is an American medical doctor ( pediatric ) who deals with infectious diseases. He is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

McCracken graduated from Williams College with a bachelor's degree in 1958 and medicine from Cornell University with a PhD in 1962 (MD). After completing his specialist training, he went to Southwestern Medical School and Children's Medical Center in Dallas in 1965.

Known for researching the pharmacokinetics of antibiotics in newborns and young children, he was a pioneer in the field starting with the dose setting. He showed that therapy with corticosteroids (in addition to antibiotics) reduced the risk of hearing loss in bacterial meningitis.

In 2004 he received the Maxwell Finland Award and in 1990 the Bristol Award . In 1991 he received the Hoechst Roussel Award.

In 1982 he founded the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal with John D. Nelson.
