The George W. Bush Bridge is a 60 meter long single-lane flyover structure and serves to cross the Grand Cess River on the eastern outskirts of the Liberian provincial capital Barclayville in Grand Kru County .
history
The Liberian government of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf asked the US for assistance in rebuilding the country devastated by civil war; The funds made available should primarily be used to improve the infrastructure. The United States Agency for International Development (US-AID), which is responsible for technical assistance, was commissioned to build a prefabricated bridge in the USA in coordination with the Liberian government; the provincial capital of Barclayville was selected for this in order to create a synergy improve the traffic routes in southeast Liberia.
A Bailey bridge was chosen as the construction type . The steel parts, prefabricated in the USA, were transported by sea to Liberia and by truck to the construction site and could be assembled with a minimum of technology. About 100 construction workers and technicians from US-AID were deployed on site for the construction; the construction-accompanying work was carried out by Liberian workers, mostly demobilized members of the civil war militias.
The inauguration of the bridge took place on April 27, 2006. It was named after the then incumbent American President George W. Bush and in the presence of the Liberian President, the US Ambassador, representatives from the staff of US-AID and the provincial government of Grand Kru County inaugurated.
