Georgina Maria Augusta Benrós de Mello , Georgina Mello for short (* in São Vicente , Cape Verde ) is a Cape Verdean economist and General Director of the Community of Portuguese- Speaking Countries (CPLP).

Life

education

Georgina Benrós de Mello was born on the island of São Vicente in Cape Verde. After her school education in Paul, on Santo Antão , she first studied economics at the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão in Lisbon . After her licenciatura , she completed various positions, including a. at CENFA on Cape Verde, at FUNDAP in Brazil and at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh . She then completed her studies in tourism, monument and development studies at the Universidade de Cabo Verde with a thesis entitled Museu virtual de Paisagens de Cabo Verde - Por um modelo alternativo de turismo (Virtual Museum of the Landscapes of Cape Verde - for alternative tourism model).

Professional background

After her academic career, Mello first worked as an economist in her home country before moving to East Timor , where she set up the agency for investments and exports and was its first managing director. For a time she was Cape Verdean Minister for Tourism, Industry and Trade.

She later held various positions within the Cape Verde public sector, among others. Her last position was that of coordinator for the national implementation of the Quadro Integrado Reforçado program of the World Trade Organization in Cape Verde. As part of this task, she was primarily concerned with the development and acquisition of investments in the island nation.

General Director of the CPLP

In February 2014, the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) appointed Georgina Mello as the new General Director. It replaced the Guinea-Bissau chairman Hélder Vaz Lopes . In her inaugural address, Mello clarified her desired change of course for the organization, which should focus much more on networking the economies and civil societies between the Portuguese-speaking countries.

In 2015 Mello received the Prémio Feminina - an award for outstanding achievements by Portuguese-speaking women. The award is given by the Portuguese Matriz Portuguesa.
