history
Before the church building was elevated to a cathedral around 1600, it was an Orthodox monastery. The Patriarch Matthew II of Constantinople (1596–1603) ordered the relocation of the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the Church of St. George. Constantinople had been under Ottoman rule since 1453 . The Fener district became the center of Greek Orthodox life in Istanbul at that time.
The church building has been changed several times over the years and few components are still of their original structure. Patriarch Timothy II (1612–1620) renovated the building and enlarged the cathedral in 1614. In the early 18th century (the sources vary over the exact year) the cathedral was damaged by fire. In 1720 the Patriarch Jeremias III. (1716–1726, 1732–1733) rebuild the cathedral. The restoration was continued by the Patriarch Paisius II . In 1738 another large fire damaged the church building.
