A certified industrial foreman metal (IHK) works in the middle management of an industrial company with a focus on metal processing . The industrial foreman metal is a publicly recognized degree at the master’s level . This is awarded after successfully completing industry-specific commercial-technical advancement training in accordance with the Vocational Training Act. The examination is nationwide and takes place in front of the examination board of a Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) on the basis of a special statutory ordinance. After passing the master craftsman's examination , the graduate has a degree that is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree at a university.

According to the ordinance for industrial masters in metal (IndMetMeistV 1997), they are supposed to prove by means of an examination that they are qualified to carry out operational, organizational and managerial tasks in the operational functional areas of maintenance, production and assembly, and to adapt to changing methods and systems in production to adapt flexibly to changing structures of work organization and to new methods of organizational development, personnel management and development and to help shape the technical and organizational change in the company. In addition, they must prove by means of a trainer aptitude test that they are capable and authorized to perform tasks of in-company training and further education.

If you want to complete further training to become a certified industrial foreman, metal IHK, you need certain qualifications:

  • training in a recognized metalworking profession
  • or training in another recognized training occupation and at least two years of professional experience
  • or at least four years of professional experience in the field of metal processing

When it comes to professional experience, it is important that this has been completed in a metalworking profession. Another requirement for admission to the master craftsman's examination is the trainer’s certificate. This proof of professional and work-related knowledge must be provided before the start of the last examination.

Contents of the training

In the area of ​​cross-disciplinary basic qualifications, knowledge of legally conscious and business management is conveyed. In terms of content, the application of methods in the areas of information, communication and planning is learned. The basic qualifications are completed by the aspects of cooperation in the company and the consideration of scientific and technical principles.

The second area comprises action-specific qualifications. These are divided into technology, organization, leadership and communication, as well as leadership and personnel. The technology includes system integration, technical application, customer support and service. In the area of ​​organization, planning, control and communication systems, occupational safety, environmental and health protection and operational costs are taught. The last aspect deals with personnel management and development .

The examination is considered to have been passed if the participant has achieved at least sufficient performance in the “Interdisciplinary basic qualifications” and at least sufficient performance in the “Action-specific qualifications” part of the test in the written tasks and the technical discussion.

Metal processing is a large branch of industry in Germany. There are around 5,000 mostly family-run businesses. Each of these companies has an average of 100 employees.
