Gerónimo de Mendieta
Gerónimo de Mendieta , also Jerónimo de Mendieta (* 1525 in Vitoria , † 1604 in Mexico City ) was a Spanish missionary and historian .
Life
Mendieta joined the Franciscan Order and went to New Spain ( Mexico ) in 1554 , where he soon distinguished himself as a tireless carer for the Indians. When he was in Spain between 1569 and 1573, he spread his view that the living conditions of the Indians should be improved. He then returned to the New World and held various church posts near Mexico City, where he also died. In 1596 he finished his "Historia eclesiastica indiana", which, however, remained in manuscript form until 1870. The work describes the Christianization of the Caribbean and New Spain since the arrival of Christopher Columbus and is characterized by open criticism of the colonization.
