Gerald Near

Gerald Near (* 1942 ) is an American church musician and composer.

Near was a composition student of Leo Sowerby at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago . He studied at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with Leslie Bassett (composition), Robert Glasgow (organ) and Elizabeth AH Green (conducting) and continued his composition studies at the University of Minnesota with Dominick Argento .

After working as a choir director at the Calvary Church in Rochester / Minnesota, Near was music director and organist at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Dallas / Texas and composer in residence at the Cathedral of St. John in Denver / Colorado from 1983 . Eventually he became choir director and cantor at the Holy Faith Episcopal Church in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Near composed mainly church music, including masses, motets and chorales as well as organ works, besides a. a. a suite in Classical Style for organ and flute and a triptych for harpsichord.
